The Bell 47 Helicopter
First flying in 1945, over 5,600 were produced all the way through 1974. It was the first commercially produced helicopter as well as serving as the H-13 Sioux in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Many of us were first introduced to the Bell 47 in "M*A*S*H", either the film or the long running television show. The Bell 47 was not only the first helicopter to fly medic casualties in combat but was also used to train the Apollo Astronauts to ready them for flying the lunar lander, was the first helicopter to do a live television broadcast as a news chopper, was the first helicopter to cross the Alps, set numerous records in both distance and altitude, one (Hurst, Texas to Buffalo, New York which still stands today).
Known for its docile nature, unparalleled visibility and ruggedness, the Bell 47, designed without computers or CAD, was built fundamentally with no-nonsense and was the predecessor of many that followed, most without the same success. It was used in civilian roles, military and training roles, and is still sought after today as an iconic no-nonsense, straight forward honest helicopter that can fly rides all day long, fly utility roles the next, and do training the day after.
